Black Friday 2023 pick of the sales
Nearly six in 10 UK consumers are planning to use Black Friday 2023 for spreading the cost of Christmas or buying essentials during the cost-of-living crisis. According to research by Nationwide, Britain’s biggest building society, spending on 24 November is likely to be up by 8 per cent on last year’s peak.
Consumers are expecting to spend on average a record £261 per person over the Black Friday weekend. Research suggests the main places for bargain hunting are well known online-only retailers, like Amazon (41%), department stores, such as John Lewis (19%) and supermarkets (14%).
According to Nationwide’s shopping survey, the top five purchase categories this year will be:
- Clothing (44%)
- Fragrances (32%)
- Shoes (28%)
- Small electrical items (27%)
- Toys and games (25%)
With that in mind, I’ve picked out some of the best sales for you in each category. But before we get started, let’s remember a few important things:
- Always set a budget and make a shopping list before hitting the shops.
- Compare prices if you’re looking for brands.
- Don’t need it right away? It might be cheaper if you wait until after Christmas.
- Black Friday isn’t for everyone and it’s fine to sit it out, especially if you’re prone to making impulse purchases you may later regret.
- If a deal seems too good to be true, it usually is – especially with online retailers that you’ve never heard of.

Black Friday clothing & fashion sales

Black Friday fragrance deals & offers
Discounts on big brand fragrances tend to run at 20% off in most department stores and chemist shops, but some stores have better deals on selected brands.
Most places are offering 20% off fragrance gift sets too, which tend to give you a free extra mini bottle of perfume along with the main large bottle, giving you more for the same price.
Older/classic fragrances and mid-priced brands tend to have bigger discounts, so be sure to shop around for those. Premium and niche fragrances are rarely on offer, so if you see something you like at a good price, snap it up!
